What is Music Therapy?

Picture
As stated by the American Music Therapy Association;

"Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program."

Music Therapists help individuals and groups work towards different goals using music as the medium. As further outlined by the AMTA: "Music therapists assess emotional well-being, physical health, social functioning, communication abilities, and cognitive skills through musical responses; design music sessions for individuals and groups based on client needs using music improvisation, receptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery, music performance, and learning through music; participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, ongoing evaluation, and follow up."

To be recognized by the Certification Board for Music Therapists and practice with the designation "MT-BC" (Music Therapist, Board Certified), an individual must:

- hold a degree in Music Therapy from an
   accredited college program

- complete 1200 hours of supervised
   practicum

- pass a board exam administered by the
   CBMT

To maintain the credential, MT-BC's must complete 100 hours of continued education every five years.

Music therapists may undergo additional training to specialize in areas such as:

- Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)
- Neonatal Music Therapy (NICU-MT)
- Analytical Music Therapy (AMT)
- Fellow of the Association of Music &
   Imagery
 (FAMI)
- Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NRMT)
