About Us

IsoRhythms Music Therapy was founded in 2014 by Neurologic Music Therapist, Amelia K. Chapman. Darcy Smith took over ownership of IsoRhythms in 2017. The IsoRhythms Music Therapy office and treatment center is located in beautiful Pacific Grove, California. IsoRhythms proudly serves the community of Pacific Grove as well as the greater Monterey peninsula, providing music therapy in many areas of the community including local elder care facilities, school districts, as well as at community events.

At IsoRhythms, we believe in meeting our patients where they are each time we have the opportunity to work with them. We take a humanistic approach in the treatment of our patients. What this means is that although a diagnosis may inform why the patient is seeking treatment, we recognize each person’s subjective experience of their diagnosis and design our treatment plans to each person’s unique needs and experiences. We do not believe there is a “cookie cutter” approach to therapy, what works for one is not necessarily going to work for all. We believe that music therapy is a valuable asset to recovery and treatment for many different diagnosis. We take pride in our holistic, integrated treatment approach and are supporters of team-based treatment, and are glad to collaborate with other allied health professions.

What does the name IsoRhythms mean?
(pronounced eye-so-rhythms)

In the field of music therapy, there is a method called the iso principle. When a music therapist is utilizing the iso principle, this means that they are meeting their patient where they are in the present moment emotionally, physically, and energetically through the music being presented. The therapist utilizes the inherent qualities of music (pitch, tempo, volume, timbre, etc.) to musically reflect the patient's current state back to them and then gradually changes the music to help the patient shift to a more positive place.
